ESKOM LIVE | More Stage 4 load shedding for the week
After a minor reprieve from load shedding during the day on Sunday, Eskom has announced the return of Stage 4.
Eskom said breakdowns amount to 15 215MW of capacity while 5 199MW of generating capacity is out of service for planned maintenance.Eskom will start a legal process to clear the way for an upgrade of power lines and increased service to the northern Limpopo province, according to a statement by the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure.
"Stage 3 load shedding will then be implemented and continue until 05:00 on Sunday morning. Load shedding will be suspended until 16:00 on Sunday afternoon, when Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented." Eskom secured funding for the diesel requirements for the remainder of the financial year, which ends in March.
The power utility announced Stage 5 load shedding on Tuesday after six generating units suffered breakdowns. Load shedding will initially jump to Stage 5 from noon on Tuesday, until 21:00. From there Stage 6 will run until 05:00 on Wednesday. Then, Stage 5 will continue until further notice. Few issues have been kicked into touch by successive administrations as much as what to do about SOEs. Privatisation has always been and still is a hot-button topic in the ANC and often pitches up as a proxy battle among ANC factions. "Government is considering additional mechanisms to address the rising cost of electricity. These include measures such as helping households and small businesses install solar power and energy-saving devices, supporting households with rechargeable lights, and working with learners to catch up where load shedding interrupts lessons," Ramaphosa said in his weekly newsletter on Monday.
