JUST IN | Loadshedding to be suspended at midnight on Friday | News24_Business

Due to lower weekend demand, load shedding will be suspended at midnight on Friday, Eskom said in a statement.

"Since Tuesday a generation unit each at Camden, Kriel, Kusile, Matla and Medupi power stations were returned to service. Two generating units at Majuba and one at Tutuka power stations were taken offline for repairs. The embattled power utility has implemented a record spell of unbroken rolling power cuts as it suffered a series of breakdowns at many of its key power stations in recent weeks.

That said, a generating unit each at Hendrina, Kendal and Majuba power stations were taken offline for repairs. "This necessitates the immediate escalation of load shedding to Stage 4 at 18:00. This stage of load shedding will be maintained until further notice. Eskom will publish a full statement tomorrow afternoon," the utility said.South Africa's record stretch of load shedding will continue this week, with Eskom confirming Stage 3 load shedding will remain in place until 05:00 on Thursday morning.

The delay in returning two generating units at Kendal power station and one generating unit at Tutuka power station to the grid has added to the capacity constraint. Eskom currently has 6 893MW on planned maintenance, while another 16 168MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.is the new chair - he previously served as an acting Eskom CEO and was described by Gordhan as a casualty of the state capture era. He is also Nedbank group chair.

The term of the board ended in 2021. Gordhan has said on dozens of occasions over the past 18 months that he was"reviewing" the board. Stage 4 load shedding will continue until 05:00 on Saturday morning and reduce to Stage 3 throughout the weekend, Eskom has announced. Load shedding was initially supposed to alternate between Stage 3 in the day and Stage 4 in the evenings this week however diesel stocks ran low after a vessel that was supposed to offload diesel at Mossel Bay couldn't berth due to rough seas.

Currently 5 206MW is out on planned maintenance, while another 15 862MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Load shedding will remain at Stage 4 throughout the night, Eskom announced on Wednesday evening. Previously, it downgraded load shedding to Stage 3 during night-time. Camden power station has a technical problem with the water chemistry, which has shut three units on Wednesday afternoon, and will shut the remaining four units, Eskom warned.28 September 14:35Stage 3 and Stage 4 load shedding will continue to be implemented between 00:00 - 16:00 and 16:00 - 00:00 respectively every day until Saturday, Eskom said on Wednesday.A full statement and a further update will be published Friday afternoon, Eskom added.

Eskom expects some generation units to return to service, but load shedding will continue to be implemented to conserve its emergency generation reserves, it said. Load shedding will be reduced to Stage 4 at 05:00 on Saturday morning, Eskom announced on Friday. A further reduction to Stage 3 will be implemented from 05:00 on Sunday until 05:00 on Monday. This after Stage 5 load shedding had been implemented since Monday.

"Should this uncertainty of diesel supplies persist, higher stages of load shedding may be required," it added. Eskom currently has 5 839MW on planned maintenance, while another 15 745MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Stage 5 load shedding will remain in place until 05:00 on Saturday morning, Eskom said on Thursday afternoon.

* Correction: This post has been updated to reflect that load shedding could be reduced by one stage, not to Stage 1 as previously stated. Eskom has approached the market to procure as much as 1 000MW of power on an expedited basis. Eskom, which provides the bulk of the nation’s electricity, began cutting 6 000MW from the national grid over the weekend - equivalent to the most on record - to prevent the collapse of the national grid and its executives warned there was a risk the situation could deteriorate further. The rand weakened to a two-year low against the dollar on Monday, while shares of mining and manufacturing companies slumped.

"It is critical we get stabilisation in the existing network while we in the private sector do what is necessary to get investment into the next stage of South Africa’s energy chapter by developing alternative additional sources of electricity in the form of renewable energy," said Roger Baxter, Minerals Council CEO.
