JUST IN | LoadShedding returns with evening Stage 2 from Monday to Wednesday | News24_Business

Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 until midnight from Monday to Wednesday Wednesday.

"While the generation capacity constraints persist, the suspension of load shedding is possible due to the anticipated lower weekend demand, as well as adequate levels of emergency generation reserves. Eskom will publish a further update on Sunday afternoon, or as soon as there are any significant changes.

"Furthermore, the delay in returning a generating unit each to service at Kendal, Komati and Tutuka power stations have added to the capacity constraints," Eskom added. Rapport reported on Sunday that a senior technician at Camden, who has been working for Eskom for years, was suspended after he allegedly intentionally opened a shut-off valve and allowed dangerous chemicals to flow into the supply of demineralised water to the boilers. The power generation boilers were consequently switched off to prevent damage to them and to turbine equipment.

He said the structure of management will change -"who sits where, in which chair, and with what responsibilities." 30 September 15:32"We can dwell on the past... but a decision has been taken now and there is a new board in place," he answers."This board is the accounting authority - it is responsible for evaluating the current performance of Eskom, and to account to the shareholder, which is the department of public enterprises.

Eskom can have a maximum of 13 non-executive directors. There are currently eight vacancies on the board, following the resignation of Business Leadership SA CEO Busisiwe Mavuso. Eskom said on Thursday afternoon that diesel deliveries have started at PetroSA’s facility in Mossel Bay, after the vessel berthed in the morning.

However, its diesel stocks are running low after a vessel that was supposed to offload diesel at Mossel Bay couldn't berth due to rough seas. Eskom depends on diesel-fired Open-Cycle Gas Turbines in Ankerlig, Cape Town, and Gourikwa near Mossel Bay for emergency power. Just over 16 700 MW is unavailable due to unplanned breakdowns, while 5 897 MW is offline due to planned maintenance.

"The capacity constraints will persist throughout next week, and current indications are that load shedding will be implemented at Stage 3 for most of the week," Eskom said in a statement. A further update will be published on Sunday afternoon, or as soon as there are any significant changes, the power utility said.

Since Thursday, a generation unit each at Camden, Kriel, Majuba and Matla power stations were taken offline for repairs. A generating unit at Hendrina and two at Kusile power stations were returned to service, Eskom said. The power utility is expected to publish a full statement with an updated load shedding schedule on Friday afternoon, with details for the weekend and the week ahead. Load shedding will continue at Stage 5 with the possibility of being downgraded by one stage by Thursday, Eskom said on Tuesday afternoon.

At a briefing on Sunday, Eskom CEO André de Ruyter explained as a way forward in addressing load shedding - which escalated to Stage 6 over the weekend - the power utility is looking to procure on an additional 1 000MW of capacity from existing Independent Power Producers and large industrial companies that have excess power capacity.

"The situation will almost definitely get worse," with no immediate signs of substantial new capacity being added to the grid, said Hilton Trollip, an energy research consultant at the University of Cape Town. The Minerals Council of SA has slammed"unnecessary bottlenecks" delaying investments in renewable energy projects, calling for faster private sector participation in resolving the country's energy crisis.
