ESKOM LIVE | Eskom warns of load shedding at short notice
After load shedding was suspended for the first time in five weeks this weekend, Eskom warned that it may return at short notice on Monday.
Some 1 018MW in electricity output is offline due to planned maintenance, while another 17 022MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. Eskom will suspend scheduled power cuts for the first time in five weeks after the generation system recovered sufficiently. "Eskom thanks the public and all stakeholders for their patience and understanding during this difficult period of load shedding. While we are able to suspend load shedding at this point, Eskom cautions that the power system constraints continue to persist," Eskom said in a statement.
Currently, around 4 500 MW are out on planned maintenance, with over 16 320 MW unavailable due to breakdowns. Some 3 934MW in power output is currently on planned maintenance, while another 14 867MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. It will add 920MW to the grid, and play a major role in bringing enhanced stability to the grid, says De Ruyter.De Ruyter says an internal disciplinary process has been launched against workers who embarked on an unlawful strike and intimidated their colleagues. Some workers can also expect criminal charges. Eskom has video recordings of"incidents", which are being submitted to police, says De Ruyter.
Three units at Eskom Kendal power station, as well as one each at Tutuka and Majuba power stations, were forced offline in recent days to perform emergency repairs. “This load shedding sequence is likely to be repeated throughout the week,” Eskom warned. Three units at Kendal, as well as one each at Tutuka and Majuba power stations were forced offline to perform emergency repairs.
The deal came after a lingering strike that plunged the country into Stage 6. Some generation units have returned to service but this has not been sufficient to suspend load shedding altogether, Eskom said. The deal includes a 7% across the board increase for all employees covered in the Central Bargaining Forum, starting 1 July 2022 until 30 June 2023. The housing allowance will increase by R400 per month.
NUM energy sector coordinator Khangela Baloyi told Fin24 that unions accepted the offer in principle and were on the cusp of signing an agreement at 14:00.Unions are scheduled to meet with Eskom at the Central Bargaining Forum at 14:00 on Tuesday afternoon, where labour is expected to formally table a mandate from membership on the power utility's latest wage offer.
