ESKOM LIVE | Another weekend of load shedding - but expect a drop to Stage 2 by Sunday

South Africa's electricity crisis has been decades in the making.

We live in an age of power for a select few and powerlessness for the majority - both literally and figuratively. We live in an age of abundance for some and want for many. We live in a time of angst, great challenge, and opportunity. We live simultaneously in an era of hope and fear.

Eskom is living hand-to-mouth in its efforts to obtain the diesel needed to continue running its open-cycle gas turbines , which, in the face of prolonged power generation outages, is the only way the utility can stave off severe and ongoing curtailment of South Africa’s electricity supply. Eskom is collapsing – and make no mistake, it is collapsing – because of ANC misrule, because of ANC cadre deployment and incompetence, because of ANC-endorsed endemic corruption, and because of ANC-led disembowelling of law enforcement.

It's now a matter of fact the ANC government's mismanagement of electricity generation is the single most significant contributor to economic regression in South Africa. And since South Africa used to power up almost the entire southern Africa, the effect of the crisis goes well beyond our borders. Minister Mantashe even suggested that De Ruyter was trying to overthrow the government through ongoing load shedding.

Despite it feeling like we have a dumpster fire of a year ahead, we should always take a moment to look beyond Eskom to assess whether there have been any improvements elsewhere in the economy. After all, we still need to hold other spheres of our government accountable. Steenhuisen said that government’s response to the energy crisis has violated the rights of South Africans. The party has also asked the court to call on government to file a"comprehensive and measurable plan containing long-term, short-term and medium-term steps to avert the energy crisis".Soweto ice cream business praised by Ramaphosa melting away due to ongoing load shedding

In meetings with political parties, organised labour and business on Monday, chaired by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the key message from the Eskom board and management was that load shedding is here to stay for the next two years. Godongwana: Load shedding will be a 'thing of the past' in the next 12 to 18 months

"As these measures take effect, the supply of electricity will significantly improve," the committee, known as Necom, said in a presentation sent to Bloomberg by Ramaphosa’s office. Citizens have been left feeling powerless as South Africa teeters on the edge of Stage 8 load shedding.

"Unfortunately Eskom has had to postpone this afternoon’s media briefing due to emergency engagements with the president," spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said in a statement. There were more than 200 days of load shedding in 2022, and cuts every day this year, including an ongoing six-day stretch of Stage 6. Eskom is expected to announce an update on the load shedding situation later on Monday. South Africa is now in its sixteenth year of rolling power cuts, and though there was previously some light at the end of the tunnel, three shocking developments in recent weeks have significantly darkened the path ahead.

- This comes after Eskom began stage 6 load shedding last week with no clear indication when it would be scaled back.
