The South African power utility Eskom is set to see an additional R440 million per month as 400,000 customers who had been avoiding payment for electricity services have now come forward to update their details. Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, revealed this during a media briefing, attributing the discovery to a technical issue with Eskom’s prepaid token system.
Eskom is set to gain an additional R440 million per month as 400 000 customers who had previously been avoiding payment for their electricity have come forward to update theirThis move is expected to significantly improve the utility’s finances, as these customers had been bypassing proper channels or illegally acquiring power through fraudulent means.
At a previous briefing, Ramokgopa had revealed that 2.1 million customers were suspected of obtaining electricity illegally. However, following recent efforts, that number has dropped to 1.7 million, thanks to many coming forward voluntarily to resolve their issues. Ramokgopa explained that the 400 000 new customers now paying for electricity, if they continue their payments, would contribute an extra R440 million in monthly revenue for Eskom.
These non-payers had been getting their electricity directly from Eskom, bypassing municipalities. Ramokgopa emphasised that such illegal practices add immense strain to Eskom’s financial health and increase the burden on law-abiding customers, who ultimately face higher electricity tariffs to make up for the lost revenue.
