Imogen shared her own experience as a way of helping others find comfort and encouraging them to seek support following a dementia diagnosis
She said: “Caring for a relative with dementia is not easy and many carers feel alone, so I produced the animation as a way of sharing my experience and hopefully others relate because it can be comforting to know that someone else is. My grandfather was a big supporter of my graphic design.
After attending hospital for a broken pelvis, Imogen’s granddad experienced delirium, thought doctors were trying to poison him and fellow patients were stealing his belongings. He later went to a care home but Imogen insists the quality of care provided was not up to scratch.Imogen said: “We couldn’t believe how quickly the disease progressed. The early signs were there but you sometimes pass it off as just old age.
“We finally brought my grandad home but his mental ability was declining and anxiety levels increasing, such as panicking who was at the door if a carer or nurse visited. We have all been grieving over the last 12 months as we saw him decline.”Carrie Holmes, Alzheimer’s Society area manager in Surrey said: “Caring for someone with dementia is the ultimate commitment but it can feel overwhelming.
