From sunhornby: Erik Karlsson dangles a Maple Leafs deal, no word on Ilya Samsonov's contract MapleLeafs Leafs LeafsForever

The day came and went without a decision from arbitrator Stephen Raymond, who presided over the hearing between the Toronto goaltender and his team on Friday. Sometime by early Sunday, per the NHL/NHLPA collective bargaining agreement, Raymond will have to pick between Samsonov’s reported $4.9 million US ask and the club’s $2.6 million submission for the coming year.

But before everyone gets too excited, Karlsson also has talked to Pittsburgh, which reportedly came close to getting him earlier this month and which now has his former Ottawa teammate Jason Spezza on staff as assistant general manager. And Toronto general manager Brad Treliving’s reputation — before arriving from Calgary to replace Kyle Dubas when the latter went to Pittsburgh — is to horn in on any discussions involving elite players changing teams, if only to wave his team’s flag.

In addition to perceived frontrunners Pittsburgh and Carolina, Karlsson said “I have spoken with Seattle, yes, also some with Toronto. There have been a few more teams as well. Yes, there is interest. Then it’s about putting things together.” Having to pay Samsonov more than double last year’s salary of $1.8 million would hinder the Leafs in a Karlsson pursuit, unless they eventually decide winger William Nylander will not retreat from a reported request for a $10 million AAV in his next deal beyond this year and make him part of a trade. The 33-year-old Karlsson has a whopping $11.5 million cap hit the next four years, despite reaching the 100-point mark on a bad team.

Karlsson does not think the rebuilding Sharks can satisfy his lust for a Stanley Cup while in his prime years and the still-competitive Leafs certainly fit the bill. Yet Karlsson insists Sharks GM Mike Grier understands his desire to move and will facilitate a trade somewhere.
