The Texas grid operator is asking residents to voluntarily curb electricity use from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday as temperatures hovering near 100 degrees across the state are expected to cause a surge in power demand.
ERCOT asked Texans to voluntarily reduce power use Tuesday afternoon amid soaring heat that was expected to hover near 100 degrees.use from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday as temperatures hovering near 100 degrees across the state are expected to cause a surge in power demand.
The voluntary conservation call comes as the state’s grid operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, is forecasting there will bethis week as sweltering temperatures continue across the state, though demand could push the grid to its limits during the hottest part of the day. “ERCOT is not experiencing any emergency conditions right now,” Pablo Vegas, CEO of ERCOT, said during a regular Tuesday morning board meeting. “Voluntary conservation is a very widely used industry tool that can help lower demand for specific periods of time, which is typically in the late afternoon and early evening during the summer.”
That’s when air conditioners are being cranked up across Texas, and demand could go over the all-time record of more than 80,000 megawatts – enough electricity to power the equivalent of 15 million homes. Natural gas fired power plants are expected to meet about half of that demand, coal and nuclear will meet between 15 percent and 20 percent, with wind and solar energy meeting the remaining demand.
