Nearly half of Houston's population is Latino or Hispanic, but just one person of that background holds a city council seat.
Hispanic and Latino advocates in Houston may face the likelihood that any imbalance of representation on the city council may remain for the foreseeable future.There will be nearly 60 people vying for 16 different seats on the Houston City Council in November after the deadline to file for candidacy passed on Monday.
Professor Mark Jones, who teaches political science at Rice University, predicts that there may be only two Hispanic and Latino candidates elected this year to single-seat districts and one from an at-large district. that will go into effect in January will be majority Hispanic and Latino. However, Dr. Sergio Lira with Greater Houston LULAC believes the representation on council will still be low. He explained why.
