The Environmental Protection Agency finalized a rule Thursday, March 14, 2024, imposing stricter limits on a chemical used to sterilize medical equipment after finding a higher-than-expected cancer risk at facilities that use ethylene oxide to clean billions of devices including catheters and syringes.
Previously, the EPA did not regulate ethylene oxide emissions from building leaks and chamber exhaust vents, but that will change under the new rules, according to the news release.
