Money from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been allocated for safeguarding drinking water across the U.S.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On February 16, the Environmental Protection Agency announced 18 million dollars in funding for Alaska to address contaminants in drinking water around the state.
The money, which comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021, has been allocated as part of 2 billion dollars for safeguarding drinking water across the U.S. Contaminants to be addressed includes Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, or PFAS, particularly in communities considered small, rural and disadvantaged.
The state will determine where specifically the money will go, and it is unclear at this point which communities will receive the funding. Areas of North Pole and Moose Creek have, in recent years, come under scrutiny from the CDC and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry for the levels of PFAS in their water.
