More than a year after a tragedy that saw 21 young tavern goers killed mysteriously, an inquest into their deaths will hopefully shed some light.
A mass funeral for teenagers who died at Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park was held after the tragic incident in June 2022.The parents whose teenage children died during what was supposed to be a night of fun at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park in an East London township are still waiting for answers about what really happened to their kids.
With the inquest of what transpired in Enyobeni starting on August 31, the parents are hoping that their questions will finally be answered. Last year, on June 26, 21 young people died during a tavern incident in which they were suspected of having inhaled deadly fumes, which resulted in many losing their lives.
Ntombizonke Mgangala, the aunt of one of the deceased, Sinothando Mgangala, who was just 17 when she died, said they were frustrated that government was not taking the matter seriously since the mass funeral. Now, they have decided as families to organise themselves and form an NPO called Scenery Park 21, which started from a WhatsApp group.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
