Realizing vision to bring new life to old properties in a historic Newfoundland town
John Norman is the mayor of Bonavista and the chief operations officer and co-owner of Bonavista Creative and Bonavista Living.BONAVISTA, N.L. — Born in western Newfoundland, John Norman considers himself very lucky to have wound up in Bonavista, adopted into a family that later settled in the historic community.
"Growing up here, I felt that I lived in the community, and I felt and feel now that the community is a very interesting study on rural economic development and success."Bonavista Creative is engaged in the ongoing revitalization of the community's commercial hub area, encouraging entrepreneurship and offering spaces for businesses, craftspeople, artists and others. Bonavista Living has focused on saving historic homes, having acquired and restored dozens of them.
The Bonavista approach for spurring rural economic development through a community's built heritage has been highlighted across the province as a model to learn from and potentially replicate. John Norman was a figure skater in his youth and also coached in the sport.
