Johnson died over the weekend after appearing to suffer a serious cut to the neck from a skate in a match in Britain’s top hockey league.
The English Ice Hockey Association is making approved neck guards/protectors a mandatory piece of equipment for “players at all levels across English Ice Hockey” in the wake of the , the EIHA announced Monday. The mandate will take effect Jan. 1, 2024, but does not include the Elite Ice Hockey League, which the participate in.
The EIHA is one of the governing bodies that oversees ice hockey in England and Wales. The EIHL has 10 franchises including teams in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England. “It is unacceptable for any player to lose their life while playing sport,” which outlined steps it will take to improve player safety. “Our responsibility is not only to avert the recurrence of such a heart-breaking accident, but also to pre-emptively address other foreseeable incidents in the future.
