England will ask Ben Stokes to come out of ODI retirement for 2023 Cricket World Cup 🏏 via iPaperSport
Stokes retired from ODI cricket in July, enjoying an emotional farewell to the format against South Africa on his home ground at Durham. That decision came after he had taken over the England Test captaincy at the start of the summer and with the international schedule so packed, something had to give.
“I did say you could always unretire. That’s his decision. It’s going to be a World Cup year and we don’t play much T20 cricket for a while but it will be up to him. The more we can get him is great. He’s doing an amazing job with the Test captaincy but he is a very big cog in the wheel when he comes back to white-ball.”
England only play 12 ODIs before heading to India for the World Cup and despite his Test commitments, Stokes could feasibly play in either the series against New Zealand or Ireland at the end of the summer given the Ashes against Australia will be finished by the end of July.
