Drivers\u0027 hours are to be logged using electronic devices instead of paper books

Harmeet Shoker, director of safety and compliance for RIG, is in favour of the change, but noted some logistical issues for truckers.

Large sections of the country lack truck stops or areas to pull over for the night. He said small towns are often not set up to handle truck traffic.Another complication is when the weather delays or shuts down a highway, as was the case last week, as the clock keeps ticking while drivers are on the road. Even a 10-minute overage to get to a safe place to park will result in a violation.

“They’re gonna be challenged,” said Shoker, who has driven a truck for 20 years. “We told them . . . ‘If you get a ticket or violation, yeah, we understand that.’ So we’re going to fight that ticket if they were stuck on the road.” Ghumman said the U.S. is 100 per cent compliant in electronic monitoring and has been for several years, but also has a better network of truck stops on interstate highways.Trucks that do not cross borders are still permitted to use traditional paper logbooks.

An emailed statement from Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors said: “With the national truck driver shortage, any additional unfunded federal mandates could affect Alberta’s supply chain and potentially lead to a delay in the delivery of essential goods for Albertans.”“I think starting at the federal level is the right way to go,” he said.
