At the end of it all, the emotions that come with a match-winning performance at his home ground and in front of his family got the better of Proteas spinner Keshav Maharaj.
“It is always nice to play double spin. At Kingsmead I am used to playing with another spinner, so it was very nice having the control of Simon on the other end.
“To be honest, I don’t think the pitch changed too much over the five days. Obviously it was not the traditional Kingsmead pitch where there is spin and bounce. In the first innings, even though he bowled well, Maharaj's lack of a wicket put the spotlight Harmer, who claimed four, with Lizaad Williams taking three.
“I was in a good space with the way I felt the ball was coming out. Of course it does get frustrating when you don’t get the reward, but I just kept hitting the right lines and lengths.”
