South Africans rejoiced once more in the pool on Sunday at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, courtesy of breaststrokers Kaylene Corbett and Tatjana Schoenmaker.to grab her first gold and defend her Commonwealth title in a time of 2:21.92.
Corbett recorded the fastest 50m in the final stretch as she touched the wall in third with a time of 2:23.67. She was 0.02 milli-seconds behind silver medallist Jenna Strauch of Australia in 2:23.65. "And I could see that I needed to give my everything to somehow touch the wall [and get] top three. I was fighting really hard, and I know God gave me the courage and gave me the bravery I needed in the last 25m."
"I can't put too much into words, to be honest. It's a moment I'll never ever ever forget," said an emotional Corbett.
