With wildfires continuing in Central Newfoundland, helicopter services are delivering essential goods to the Coast of Bays area for the second day in a row. The Sound of Islay, which left Lewisporte for Fortune on Sunday, Aug. 7, has been delayed by mechanical difficulties and is in St. John’s for repairs. Two helicopters are taking essential goods between Central Newfoundland and Harbour Breton for the second day in a row as the Bay d’Espoir Highway remains closed due to the fires. Helicopter services will continue transporting goods for the remainder of the emergency.Additionally, the province has set up two new phone lines for the central Newfoundland forest fire emergency.
A Provincial Emergency Operations Centre phone line will be available to answer questions about supplies, transportation and other general questions.The Central Health phone line, 1-833-960-4751, has been established for all health questions. The health line will also operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A messaging service will be available to help with incoming calls outside the phone line’s operating hours.
