There was little to cheer for South Africa, with Elroy Gelant the only local athlete to cross the finish line in 34th position in a time of 2:16:43. Tokyo2020 Olympics TeamSA By AshfakMohamed IOLSport

It also meant that Kipchoge couldn’t chase his world-record mark of 2:01.39.

Mokoka even took the lead briefly ahead of the Kenyan trio of Kipchoge, Lawrence Cherono and Amos Kipruto, while 5 000m track star Gelant also managed to keep up with the leaders. Disaster struck for Team SA, though, as the 36-year-old Mokoka suddenly slowed down after the 30km, when he was in 13th position in 1:32:54, and a ‘DNF’ flashed up next to his name on the leaderboard soon after that.
