State College’s Ella Tambroni helped lead her team past Cedar Cliff Monday. Sean Simmers | [email protected] Cliff and State College are separated by just two spots in the PIAA District III standings, and with the push to the playoffs on, that meant Monday’s early game between the teams’ at Cedar Cliff was probably going to be a battle. But in the end, Michigan State pledge Ella Tambroni put in three goals for State College in what turned out to be a 4-2 win.

Cedar Cliff got another chance on a corner with 5:08 left in the first quarter, and another tough battle inside the circle, well defended once more by State College. This time the Little Lions pushed the ball back out to midfield to prevent the Colts from getting anything back in and the first ended with State College up 1-0.

And Tambroni made good again, lifting the ball right to the left edge of the cage, where it bounced across and into the back net, for her third goal. Just 32 seconds after the restart, Cedar Cliff was in business with Claire Markley getting in on scoring action with an unassisted goal, pulling the Colts back within 4-2.The eight and ninth seed face each other in the first round of the District III AAA tournament, and Cedar Cliff only needs to jump up one spot to become that 9th team, which would face them up with State College for the first round.
