MyBroadband analyzed the cost of refueling various vehicles for four routes in South Africa, comparing electric vehicles (EVs) to petrol, diesel, and hybrid alternatives. The study found that EVs can be more affordable for shorter trips, but longer journeys require more recharges at public charging stations, potentially making them more expensive.

Driving an electric vehicle to your holiday destination this year can save you some money over driving a petrol, diesel, or hybrid car, depending on the length of the route.

We also calculated the EV’s first fill charge using Eskom’s Homepower 4 tariff for Block 2 customers to represent charging the EV at home before hitting the road. The petrol-powered Polo 1.0TSI costs R362.99, while the fuel needed to drive the Renault Duster along the same route costs R340.38. The Volvo EV still beats the petrol and diesel-powered alternatives for this route, with total charging costs amounting to R423.48. If the driver leaves with a full charge, the trip would require one recharging stop.

The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid was also more affordable for the remaining two routes, with fuel costs amounting to R527.15 for a trip between Johannesburg and Durban and R1,289.72 for a journey between Johannesburg and Cape Town.
