Councils hope to save hundreds of lives by installing a new system in vulnerable people’s homes so authorities can quickly spot when temperatures drop and stay low over the winter

Councils around the country have now started using remote monitoring technology to try and reduce the number of vulnerable people from putting their health at risk. One care leader suggested a social care tariff should be introduced to help reduce costs for the elderly and save lives as winter approaches.

Reading, Nottingham, Gateshead and North Tyneside are among the local authorities that have begun using remote monitoring for hundreds of elderly residents to keep them safe this winter – last yearA growing body of evidence suggests cold homes lead to increased likelihood of dampness and mold, causing ill-health in elderly people and those with chronic health problems.

“Early warning of health issues can help prevent a hospital visit to treat hypothermia or respiratory illness. This also relieves pressure on beds and D2A pathways as less people are admitted as patients. Additionally, for decision-makers, remote monitoring technology can ensure resources are properly allocated to where they are most needed, ensuring the delivery of care is not adversely affected at peak times.”.
