Jesse Mueller retired from full-time golf in 2014 to work at Grand Canyon University's course. Now, he's preparing to play in the PGA Championship.
Next to Jesse Mueller’s desk, in the back corner of the pro shop at Grand Canyon University’s golf course, there’s a framed drawing of the ninth hole at San Francisco’s Olympic Club.This is the crowning relic of Mueller’s past life, when he used local qualifying to not only reach the major championship but make the cut, bringing home $24,912 in earnings and memories of playing Saturday with Rickie Fowler.
All of that will be interrupted this week. On Saturday, Mueller, 39, and his wife, Jessie, took off for Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he’ll play in the PGA Championship this week as one of 20 club pros in the field of 156. Still, Mueller couldn’t fully leave his playing days behind. While he no longer has the time for his old six-days-a-week, eight-hours-a-day practice schedule, he still takes advantage of the facilities at GCU for occasional practice.
Through local qualifying paths, Mueller qualified twice apiece for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas and the WM Phoenix Open over the past five years, making one cut. “Everything kind of coming together where all the parts of my game, I feel pretty good about,” Mueller said. “There's times where I'll hit the ball pretty good but maybe my short game's just not quite feeling as good. Or I feel pretty good about my putting but I'm a little bit off with my swing. But I feel like I'm pretty confident about all of it right now.”
