If it's approved, voters will decide in November whether to strengthen the city's ethics oversight commission
An effort to boost the independence and authority of the San Diego Ethics Commission is moving forward to the City Council, and potentially to voters this November. The council’s rules committee voted unanimously this past week to advance a proposed charter amendment to the full council. In April, the same committee voted 3-2 to send the proposal back for further debate and amendments.
The charter change also would make commissioners responsible for setting commission rules and policies related to investigations, also in an effort to prevent politics from informing any future commission cases or other activities. Elliott brought the proposed charter amendment forward as part of a broader ethics reform project she introduced last year. Many of the other changes she recommended do not require voter approval and will be presented to the council later this year, she said.
