He attributes the threats to his outspoken stance and refusal to leave the EFF despite the defection of other members to the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.

He has had to increase security for himself and his family because of the threats he has been receiving on social media. Niehaus believes that most of the attacks stem from his decision to remain in the EFF when others left to join the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. He has stated that he has expressed certain views about the MK party, which has angered some individuals.
Niehaus has defiantly responded to his critics on social media, stating that he will continue to speak the truth about Jacob Zuma, even when it is unpopular. He also criticized those who lie about President Julius Malema, accusing them of hypocrisy
