El Departamento de Energía de Estados Unidos anunció el jueves que destinará 440 millones de dólares a la instalación de paneles solares en hogares de bajos ingresos en Puerto Rico, cuando el territorio estadounidense lidia con continuos cortes de energía y una red eléctrica obsoleta.
La secretaria de Energía, Jennifer Granholm, que visita Puerto Rico por sexta vez este año, dijo que el departamento ha seleccionado un grupo de organizaciones sin fines de lucro y compañías solares para el proyecto, que abarcará hasta 40,000 hogares.
El anuncio es el impulso más reciente para ayudar a Puerto Rico a reducir su dependencia de los combustibles fósiles y de una red eléctrica en desintegración, descuidada durante décadas antes que fuera arrasada por el huracán María en 2017 y azotada por el huracán Fiona el año pasado.
