South African Democratic Teachers' Union spokesperson, Nomusa Cele, said every facet of society was affected by power outages, including schools.
"Even commuting to school is a problem. When traffic lights are not working, it causes traffic jams, and this can cause late arrival of learners at schools. It really has a negative impact on education." However, Deacon was concerned about pupils studying at home, especially matric pupils preparing for their preliminary exams. At home, learners have only a few hours of electricity to study. Those learners without alternative resources are affected severely.
