“What that means is that it stops public complaints because the individuals on our teams are engaging with the public and the community members in the space before situations can escalate, and also reduces victimization in this space,” she said at the meeting, adding the teams made 26,538 contacts over the past five months including positive contacts as well as criminality and medical needs.

Police did not have information on multiple interactions with the same individuals in the targeted zones, but commissioners can expect to see HSOC’s first quarterly report in June, Kemp said.

The time during which the 2022 detainees were in custody before overdosing and receiving medical treatment ranged from five minutes to 20 hours and 27 minutes, the report said, with eight of the 14 overdoses occurring within the first five hours, two after 12 or more hours, and two occurring with time in custody unknown.Article content

To mitigate overdoses, the report said, the DMU uses body scanners to detect items on a person, paramedics to conduct medical assessments and make referrals to aproviding remote treatment options, as well as an integrated care centre on that opened March 29 for folks detained for public intoxication.
