The girl, who turned 16 shortly before the start of rehearsals, was in her first professional role, which required her to temporarily drop out of full-time school. She was part of the adult company and no longer required supervision by the child-minder assigned to the under-15 actors. The complainant and accused disagreed on other points. Howarth denied the woman’s claims that he would surreptitiously buy her alcoholic drinks during cast gatherings. He also said he never lorded his importance in the theatre community over her, painting himself as at most a moderately successful actor who worked other jobs to pay the bills.
Howarth also denied using the pretext of tutoring the girl to maintain their relationship after the Citadel play ended.
