Editorial | Year of turmoil – and hope

Hardly had the year started when the narcissist of Russia, Vladimir Putin, invaded neighbouring Ukraine, sparking a bloodbath that shook the world. We watched with growing alarm and a deepening sense of impotence as civilian sites – private homes, schools and other soft targets – were razed to the ground.

While we must highlight the Ukraine invasion for reasons already stated, we cannot overlook various instances of ongoing conflict on our own continent. As the UK’s Queen Elizabeth was shuffling off this mortal coil – an occasion mourned by some, but also celebrated by many – the UK was in a tailspin. During her brief reign, however, she and Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng managed to wreak havoc on the British economy by introducing outlandish policies.

Then the nation was utterly shocked when, upon revelations regarding the Phala Phala theft saga, President Cyril Ramaphosa used Jacob Zuma-style tactics, refusing to take accountability for what had happened on his property and trying to use legal technicalities to extricate himself from the imbroglio. His behaviour was grist to the mill of his nemeses who have been pushing the narrative that he was as corrupt as, if not worse than, Zuma.
