StarEditorial: In the coming weeks, residents across Ontario should find time to think carefully about what they want for their town or city and which candidates for municipal council they think will do the best job.
That’s how many people are eligible to vote in Toronto to decide the makeup of the next city council as well as the trustees on four school boards.
Thirty-one candidates are running to be mayor. It’s a dynamic field that includes newcomers like Chloe-Marie Brown, a policy analyst, and candidates like Sarah Climenhaga and D!ONNE Renée who have run before. His main challenger, Gil Penalosa, certainly does not lack ideas for Toronto. What he does lack is political experience. That’s not insignificant. The mayor’s job demands political skills, whether dealing with council to get initiatives passed or working with the provincial and federal governments to secure funding.
Under Tory’s tenure, Penalosa says Toronto has become less equitable and less affordable. “We don’t have the city we want, not because of a lack of powers, but because of a lack of vision,” he says.for Toronto recently implemented by the province.
