The audit of our 257 municipalities’ performance in the 2022/23 financial year paints a grim picture of government’s failure to deliver services to communities.
Inadequate skills and a lack of capacity were two of the issues Maluleke said underlined the challenges in municipalities. Only 38 municipalities received clean audits in 2022/23, a decrease from previous auditing period’s 41 clean outcomes.The report stated that an amount of R25.47 billion was incurred as unauthorised expenditure in 175 municipalities. There are 70% vacancies in municipalities that received a disclaimer outcome.
