Having encountered some resistance to their homophobic evangel in their own country, these American fundamentalists have moved to Africa with their crusade to humiliate, denounce and, where possible, imprison members of the LGBTIQ+ community.
What was shocking was not the words of a woman Ugandan parliamentarian calling for gay men to be castrated, but one was disturbed by how some South Africans – at least those who phoned into the various radio talk shows this week – reacted to the promulgation of the law. They argued that Uganda was a sovereign state entitled to conduct its business without foreign interference.
This logic is disingenuous and ahistorical. When the black majority were travailing under the yoke of apartheid in the sovereign state of South Africa, it took the interference of the international community for this evil system to be exposed, criticised and finally toppled. Had the international community refused to interfere, we could be telling a different story about South Africa today.
