We may be seeing improvements but Pearson International Airport and the air travel network remains a far distance from where it needs to be. It needs to put a priority on passengers. StarEditorial
Here’s a reality about air travel. It’s rarely an impulse purchase. Plans must be made, accommodation booked, rental car reserved and vacation time secured. Indeed, travel web sites recommend booking tickets months in advance to get the best fares.
There’s been little accountability and a lot of finger-pointing for the chaos that has ensued. Blame the airport. Blame the airlines. Blame the COVID-19 testing. Blame the passengers, who, it was claimed, had forgotten how to travel. Blame the weather., the root of the airport chaos appears to have been simply that demand for air travel outstripped the capacity to provide it. There have not been enough workers to keep the airport running smoothly.
And yet problems persist, by late afternoon Monday, the operator of Pearson airport was reporting that more than five per cent of the day’s departures and almost eight per cent of arrivals had been cancelled. Many other flights were delayed. Clearly, there’s some distance to go yet to making air travel more reliable and infinitely less stressful.
