Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, burning at about half the carbon dioxide equivalent of coal. Natural gas is essential to the electricity grid to quickly increase and decrease electricity generation to meet hourly, daily and seasonal demands. Last week, the IESO issued three reports estimating the cost of decarbonizing Ontario’s grid at $400 billion by 2050, relying on as yet unproven replacement technologies. They were never needed to eliminate Ontario’s use of carbon-intensive coal-fired electricity, which the previous Liberal government actually did using natural gas and nuclear power — the latter of which emits no greenhouse gases.
