The comprehensive investigations conducted by the January 6 committee and the committee's nine public hearings this past year represent the most constructive and useful response so far to the Trump-inspired assault on the seat of American government.

Electoral reform is vital, and yet our most basic task is to move beyond the malevolent influence of the former president and his army of election deniers. That process may have begun. That last observation is telling. Cornyn and his fellow Trump apostates are at last coming to acknowledge that Trump is a loser. In Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and most recently in Georgia, his outsized influence has cost the party dearly.
With the exception of a handful, they tolerated a man who, in the infamous “Access Hollywood” tape, bragged about abusing women. . . who insulted war heroes. . . who acknowledged “very fine people on both sides” of the Unite the Right march in Charlottesville that drew white nationalists and other extremists. . . who attempted to extort the government of Ukraine, an outrage that resulted in his first impeachment. . . who cozied up to Russia’s Vladimir Putin and other dictators. . .
