We are amazed at how badly Denver Public Schools and Superintendent Alex Marrero have rolled out the proposed closure of 10 schools to the community.
This is unacceptable. School board members expect answers. Parents expect answers. Teachers expect answers. The community as a whole expects answers. The loss of 6,000 students since 2014 has blown a $97 million hole in the district’s budget, which trickles down, impacting the smallest schools the most. Closures seem unavoidable, and getting students into more well-funded schools is in their best interests, even if the school is two miles away.
Marrero can’t turn back the clock, but if he wasn’t already planning on it, he needs to be at each school meeting that is scheduled in the coming two weeks for what he said in an interview with Chalkbeat would be “intimate and intense community engagement.”
