Editorial: Why didn’t Ogg, judges vote to ban cheap bail for dangerous Harris County defendants?

It’s baffling to us that, given the stakes, two criminal court judges on the bail bonds board, Amy Martin and Shannon Baldwin, didn’t vote on the minimum bail fee proposal. Why wouldn’t they jump at a chance to shore up judges’ power to determine bail amounts? We couldn’t get an answer.

But any statewide changes would have to wait until the 2023 legislative session. Until then, we need local action. Commissioners Court took a much-needed step toward greater transparency last month bythat analyzes bail amounts for felony and misdemeanor cases from 2017 through 2021. Missing from the dashboard, however, are the puny surety fees some bondsmen are charging.
