StarEditorial: The issues confronting the nation should be vigorously debated in the House of Commons. Surely those debates can be civil too.
The House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa inspires awe. Part of that comes from its design. Like the original Centre Block chamber now being renovated, the Commons’ current temporary home in West Block is an impressive space, with its soaring skylight ceiling and stone walls.
The House of Commons resumes sitting on Tuesday, its return delayed a day for the Queen’s funeral on Monday. The differences in politics, policies and personalities are sharply defined, setting the stage for vigorous debates that we fear could turn ugly in an overheated partisan atmosphere. In some ways, this editorial’s appeal for civility in political debate is an evergreen topic. It can always be written no matter the make-up of the Commons, who is occupying the prime minister’s seat or who is sitting as opposition leader.
