The small but dedicated crew that puts on the exhibition has had a difficult year. Three members of their team died since the spring — people who had dedicated hundreds of hours helping to ensure the fair went off without a hitch each year. Nova Scotia, and Hants County in particular, is lucky to have an exhibition of this calibre — one that not only celebrates the region’s rich agricultural heritage but embraces changing interests and technologies.News broke earlier this month that Shelburne County would host a festival similar to the beloved Windsor West Hants Pumpkin Regatta.

The event was a curiosity, starting in 1999 with five giant pumpkins grown by the legendary Dill family. The last regatta took place in 2019, when, due to a poor growing season, only five giant pumpkins were raced. Then the pandemic hit — limiting or cancelling all public events — and that coincided with Fisheries and Oceans Canada enforcing the Fisheries Act and Lake Pisiquid being drained.
