Yet it did . Now, on Canada Day, we have an opportunity to take stock of how far we’ve come.
True, our NHL hockey team needs work. So does our CFL team. So does – oh never mind, we admit the professional sports side of our town is a bit weak. But the rest of us amateurs enjoy access to cycling and walking paths; urban cross-country ski trails; and good beaches within city limits. Our institutions of higher learning produce well educated citizens. We broadly embrace immigration and diversity. We throw a decent, if prim, Canada Day party.
Yes, we also struggle with seemingly intractable big-city problems: housing affordability, addiction, poverty, crime. We fought over the pandemic. And recently our clean and sometimes complacent capital has awakened to the future that climate change might bring — through a choking haze that strains breathing and has left eyes watering.
