Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi lamented the need for a government plan to curb illegal mining. Well, it already has a plan for mine rehabilitation – which, like many others, hasn't been implemented. What are they waiting for? The next tragedy?

This week 17 people, including three children, died after inhaling toxic fumes from a gas canister containing nitric oxide at the Angelo informal settlement in Boksburg.

The problem is of government not implementing mine rehabilitation measures, as it undertook to do, and of law enforcement officials allowing zama zamas to operate with impunity.An audit conducted by the Auditor-General’s office reportedly found that “pollution, toxic gases, infertile soil and severely degraded water resources have had a negative impact on the health and safety of residents”.
