Edinburgh Zoo has shared adorable snaps of the litter of critically endangered piglets they welcomed earlier this summer.
Four ten-week-old Visayan piglets born at Edinburgh Zoo have been named, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has announced.
The piglets were confirmed to be female at their first health check. Named Hilda, Effy, Esme and Ruth, the four sisters were snapped in adorable pictures at the appointment. Born June 25, the piglets join mum Nikki and dad Elvis at the zoo. This is their first litter of piglets together after Elvis arrived atin January from Bristol Zoo Gardens following its closure. Nikki previously welcomed piglet Mabel in August 2021 with the zoo's other male pig, Jacques.
Edinburgh Zoo is home to ten Visayan warty pigs in total. The species is critically endangered and there is thought to be as few as 200 remaining in the wild. Visayan warty pigs are extinct in 98 percent of their former range and they are only found on two small islands in the Philippines, making them one of the rarest wild pigs in the world. This is the first litter of piglets between mum Nikki and dad Elvis.
