Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has spoken about his decision to turn down Tyson Fury and why the Anthony Joshua fight has not materialised

The WBC heavyweight champion is preparing for his exhibition bout with Francis Ngannou, which will be followed by an undisputed world title clash with Oleksandr Usyk. Fury is continuing to build his legacy and could be considered an all-time great heavyweight at the end of his career.

“When he imploded and put on all that weight, he contacted me and he said would you be interested in signing me? He had beaten Klitschko at the time and that was unbelievable - I thought he didn’t have a chance in that fight,” Hearn told The Overlap. “He asked if I would be interested, I said yes. I was in Monaco at the time and he flew out.

In the coming months, Fury will take on Usyk in the first undisputed heavyweight title fight since 1999. However, Fury has faced repeated criticism for failing to agree to a similar fight with Anthony Joshua, when the two British fighters held all four belts. The respective promoters also received backlash and Hearn has sought to explain why the fight is yet to come to fruition.

However, Hearn has not given up hope of the fight eventually coming together. The promoter believes Joshua is still well-suited to defeat Fury and insists that the fight has the potential to be the 'biggest of all time'.
