“You talk about a warrior in sports, Travis is the definition of that. It’s how he reacted to the injuries, the setbacks and the disappointments. He always overcame it. Time after time after time h…
Travis Lulay was first approached by the B.C. Lions through their intermediary, Bob O’Billovich, after his senior year at Montana State.“We put you on our neg list,” advised the noble Obie, who starred at Montana State almost half a century before Lulay.Four years later, he’d find out.
“It dawned on me then I was being evaluated and this isn’t a done deal by any means. I’ve got to show them I can play.” In 10 years with the Leos, he had experienced dizzying highs and paralyzing lows; winning a Grey Cup in his adopted home, while coming back from injuries no sane man would endure. And now it’s over. Just like that.
Quarterback Mike Reilly, his former teammate who is now the poster boy for a reimagined Lions’ franchise, was there Thursday along with so many people who’ve born witness to Lulay’s journey. When Lulay’s first daughter, Parker, was born in 2012, Reilly was preparing for his first start as a Lion. He left the facility, headed straight to the hospital where he sat with Lulay’s and Kim’s parents, then watched his pal walk out of the delivery room with his baby daughter in his arms.As part of a care package for the new father, Reilly brought over a Beaver Buzz energy drink and a couple of other items.
This past September, Lulay was walking around the old port in downtown Montreal when, like so many athletes confronting the end of their careers, he began to reminisce. He thought about his first training camp with the Lions when he showed up with one small suitcase because he didn’t know if he’d be driving back to Montana in a couple of weeks.
