The East Coast Music Awards Festival is kicking off today! Here’s what you need to know to make the most out of the ECMAs:

“It has the biggest footprint in terms of what we’re doing,” ECMA CEO Andy McLean said in a recent interview. “Being the 35th it’s really important not to under-deliver for Halifax and also it’s significant that it’s the first fully in-person ECMAs we’ve done in three years.” “It’s going to feature all kinds of Indigenous cultural celebrations,” McLean said. “I think it’s an amazing opportunity to take over Grand Parade there for everybody who’s coming in, not just local folks but also the international visitors to really enhance the whole experience.”
Heather Rankin, who was propelled to stardom as a member of the Rankin Family in the 1990s, will be participating in the ECMA Cup, a charity hockey game.Musicians attempting to take on former NHLers and athletes in a charity hockey game is an ECMA tradition, but the basketball game is new. Both are pay-what-you-can events.
“I’m not saying there’s any rivalry between the hockey folks and the basketball folks but one’s on Wednesday and one’s on Saturday so there’s plenty of space between the two,” McLean said, perhaps trying to start something.Outside of the free category, there is absolutely no shortage of concerts happening around town this week, featuring the best of East Coast talent.
“We have over 12,000 one-on-one business meetings over three days — that’s the area of the ECMAs that people don’t pay much attention to,” he said.
