Former DA leader Lindiwe Mazibuko and more South Africans took to social media on Thursday to react to Renaldo Gouws' suspension.
Newly sworn-in Member of Parliament Renaldo Gouws trended on X on Thursday, 20 June after the Democratic Alliance suspended him with immediate effect, pending a disciplinary hearing.Mazibuko says: “For now, he retains his seat as a Member of Parliament, pending the outcome of a party disciplinary process. Constitutionally, elected MPs can only be removed from office under limited circumstances. In this case, if their party membership is terminated.
Mazibuko’s comment comes after more than 35 000 South Africans signed a petition calling for Gouws’ removal from Parliament, accusing him of being racist.“I refute any claims of racism or being a racist. I can, however, see how my message was distorted in the way. It was delivered by me, and I take full responsibility for the actions of my younger and immature self. For that, I apologise unreservedly,” he says.
The DA on Thursday suspended Gouws after a 2012 video clip of him resurfaced in which he can be heard using the k****rs” and n*** words.reports that the DA has established that the video circulating on social media is genuine and not as fake as initially suspected.Note: for now, he retains his seat as a Member of Parliament, pending the outcome of a party disciplinary process.
