Many residents in Karoo towns are queueing for water, with taps running dry.Graaff-Reinet is having its worst drought on record."Now we are experiencing load-shedding. I am thirsty, but to be able to drink something I have to make sugar water,” said uMasizakhe resident, Noluthando Mbotya.A summit has been held to try and prevent a Day Zero in the Eastern Cape.

“The drought started in 2014, and over time some areas have been able to respond positively to the drought, but the Eastern Cape has not been able to respond. "It is now beyond just the Eastern Cape. It needs some other interventions that can be able to come in, in order to assist,” said Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau.
